We finally delivered the final shipment of books to the Edmonton Institution for Women a few weeks ago (it had to happen in stages due to the size of the library and not wanting to overwhelm the inmate librarian...)

I want to thank the Edmonton Law Libraries Association for all of its support for the GELA bookdrive, especially the Queen's Printer, Judy-Lynn at the Alberta Court Libraries,  Andrea at Emery Jamieson and Melissa and Josette at Fraser Milner Casgran. I still need to collect some books from some of you - but I must say that the addtions from ELLA members have made the prison library that much better! Thank you.

Extra thanks to Melissa and Josette for their expertise with the Inmagic catalogue - we may snag Melissa again soon to help train the new inmate librarian. This type of support is invaluable.

We still have some clean up to do at the library - but hope to start soon with some literacy programs, regular visits/mentoring with the inmate librarians and more! We have been able to get a practicum student from SLIS to do a project in the prison library starting this winter. Exciting times ahead.

Thanks again - and if you'd like more information about the prison committee and the work we are doing, please contact me directly at kwurmann@ualberta.ca

Wow, the Queen's Printer generously offered to donate a set up the RSA 2000 to the Women's Prison book drive.  Thank you to Gisele Abt.  I have no doubt the inmates will appreciate the resource very much!

Freedom to Read Week!

The Greater Edmonton Library Association is partnering with a student group at School of Library & Information Studies during Freedom to Read Week to launch a book drive to collect titles for the Bissell Centre and the Edmonton Women's Prison library.  They will be accepting donations at the SLIS table in HUB mall during the entire week of February 24th - March 1st, 2008.  They will also be accepting donations beyond this week and well into the spring. For further information see their website: http://www.gela.ca/book.htm or contact Kirsten Wurmann  kwurmann@ualberta.ca

The Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) has formed a Women’s Prison sub-committee and is looking for volunteers from the library community. The committee stems from a desire to become involved in Community Development Librarianship. This approach looks at libraries and/or librarians providing access to information to all community members, even those socially excluded and marginalized.
We have established 4 main priorities at this time:
·         Database improvement (Inmagic experts welcome!)
·         Weeding
·         Collection policy development
·         Book drive (probably Spring 2008 with some specific guidelines about what the women need and want in their library)

We also hope to organize another tour of the prison later on in the year.  If you would like more information about this committee or would like to volunteer your time, please contact Kirsten Wurmann at kwurmann@ualberta.ca
